Born as the second son of Sheik Sohanidd al-Milan and his wife, seven years younger than their heir Malik, Salah Altair al-Milan always knew that it was guarding his siblings that was his biggest task in life. Learning the skills needed for that and for survival, he started early to display skills, especially with a blade. It was also clear that he had a temper that was a bit unpredictable, and that he's the sort of person who would be able to pull out the not quite honorable tricks in a fight, if he feels it's necessary.
He also learned other things a man of his station should know. Etiquette, dancing, writing and lessons in history among them, as well as developing a skill at playing chess. And he's been known to be fiercly loyal to his family, especially his siblings.
Of all the three siblings he has, he's always been the closest to his sister Nima. The two of them would often go fishing, and similar activities. He spent some time teaching her how to use a bow, so she could defend herself before enemies got close enough, although since then she's went far beyond him in skill. There were also some times after he had taken an interest in a girl, when his sister wrote some poems for him to deliver to that girl.
Then when it was time for his sister to leave, to be their representative at Darfield, Altair spoke with his father, and it was decided that he should be one of those going with her. After all, who was better suited to make sure his sister was doing well than him? It was with mixed feelings that he set out, knowing he would miss home, but also knowing he would miss Nima far more if he didn't go with her. And so he went, determined that nothing would make trouble for his little sister.
